Somerville Mayor Talks Construction Season

Somerville residents will notice a number of infrastructure projects this season, according to Mayor Joe Curtatone. They include the Beacon Street and Cedar Street projects along with work on parks and open space areas, including Lincoln Park, Hoyt Sullivan Park, Nunziato Park, and the Winter Hill Community Innovation Schoolyard. This is important work, but as the Mayor notes, it’s moving forward in the midst of national underinvestment in roads, bridges, transport systems, and other infrastructure. The American Society of Civil Engineers gave the nation’s infrastructure a grade of D+, and here in Massachusetts, crumbling roads cost each driver an average of $539 per year in car damage. “Ultimately, we need a national culture change around infrastructure,” the Mayor writes. “We as citizens must demand that our nation invest in the infrastructure that will keep us competitive in a global economy.”
