The Somerville News Weekly Special Person of the Week:Norman “Stoney” Stone

By Frank Santangelo

Meet this week’s “Special Person of the Week:Norman “Stoney”Stone! Born and raised in Somerville, he went into the Army in 1968 and then on to Vietnam in 1969.
After returning stateside, Norman worked as an ambulance driver for Professional Ambulance and then for the M.B.T.A where he worked for many years.
Norman ultimately retired from the M.B.T.A to take on the full time task train an unknown 16 year old named John Ruiz, whom he brought through the ranks to become the first latino heavyweight world champion!
Stoney is a you-tube sensation whom you can find daily at the Somerville Boxing Club where he remains president, and continues to mentor kids and donates countless hours there.
He now resides in Wilmington, but his heart is, and always will be in Somerville!
Stony has always been and still is on the front lines from many charities and worthy causes here in Somerville.

Our hats are off to his true Somerville spirit!

We here at the Somerville News Weekly salute you for everything that you do to make Somerville a better place.
