Senator Jehlen Appointed Chair of Special Senate Committee on Innovative Education

Senator Patricia Jehlen Named to Committee Posts

BOSTON – On Wednesday, January 21, Senate President Stanley Rosenberg
appointed Senator Patricia Jehlen (D-Somerville) to multiple committee posts. Senator Jehlen will now serve as Assistant Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means, Chair of a new Special Committee on Innovative Education, Chair of the Joint Committee on Elder Affairs and Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Education.
“I am very pleased the Senate President entrusted me with these positions,” said Senator Jehlen. “Through these committees I will work to ensure that our children have great public school educations, our seniors have access to the care and communities they need, and that our state budget is fair to all.”

Special Senate Committee on Housing
Dorcena Forry – Chair Chandler – Vice Chair

This committee will examine and make recommendations to move the Commonwealth towards sustainable housing policy that will increase access to housing for low and moderate income individuals and families, reduce homelessness and make recommendations to appropriately allocate state resources.
Special Senate Committee on Innovative Education

The charge of this special committee is to review the current status of alternative models for delivery of education services, to discuss the future of those models including sustainability and funding, and to suggest new pathways for innovative education in the Commonwealth.

Special Senate Committee on Opioid Addiction
Flanagan – Chair

This committee will be tasked with assessing the implementation of recently passed legislation to combat opoid abuse and make further recommendations to strengthen our Commonwealth’s ability to respond to the opioid crisis with a focus on prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery.

Special Senate Committee on Marijuana
Lewis – Chair

This committee will assess the implementation of medical marijuana and examine the issue of marijuana legalization in other states and make recommendations for the Senate regarding any legalization or ballot initiative on the subject.

Joyce – Chair Tarr – Vice Chair

The charge of this committee is to examine and evaluate government spending across all public agencies, quasi-public agencies and municipalities throughout the Commonwealth and matters related thereto. The committee will assess existing finances, systems and procedures and seek to identify measures that will result in savings and efficiencies, improved performance and enhanced outcomes.
