Kathleen Flora McAteer – Of Somerville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 21, 2025. She was 81 years old.

Born in Medford, she was the beloved daughter of the late Joseph S. and Frances (Gallagher) McAteer.

Kathleen dedicated many years of her life working in the kitchen at Harvard University, where she was honored by Harvard with a Hero Award for her unwavering commitment to standing up for her co-workers whenever she felt they were being treated unfairly.

Kathleen had a love for travel and delighted in exploring new cities and discovering new experiences. She was also deeply devoted to giving back, spending countless hours volunteering at the Beverly School for the Deaf. There, she worked alongside professors on research projects and seminars, contributing to meaningful efforts that benefited the community.

Kathleen enjoyed a good cup of coffee and a jelly donut.

Beloved daughter of the late Joseph S. and Frances (Gallagher) McAteer. Devoted sister of Mary Kelley and her husband William of Somerville, and the late William McAteer and Daniel McAteer. Loving aunt of Robin Carleton and her husband David, William Charles Kelley and his wife Michelle, and Lynne Chaille and her husband Warren. Loving great-aunt of Matthew, Emma, Jack, Julia and Andrew.

Calling Hours will be held in the George L. Doherty Funeral Home 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) Somerville, on Thursday, August 28th from 9:00AM to 10:30AM. Followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Ann Church 399 Medford St., Somerville at 11:00AM.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Services will conclude with burial at Puritan Lawn Cemetery, Peabody.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Kathleen’s name to the Beverly School for the Deaf 6 Echo Ave Beverly, Ma 01915.
