Northeast Youth Ballet’s Spring Series: Ethereal Space

NYB’s final performance of the Realm of Imagination performance season, Ethereal Space (March 8–9), is inspired by the boundless beauty and elegance of romantic short stories. The program will take place at the J. Everett Collins Center of the Performing Arts.

The program will open with Sketches from
Grace, choreographed by renowned choreographer and Bonnefoux McBride Artistic Director of ChautauquaSchool of Dance, Sasha Janes, who has generously offered to share his ballet that debuted with Charlotte ballet in 2016 set to the soulful music of Jeff Buckley.

We look forward to presenting his work that features three short vignettes and a finale with our invited NSB alumni and guest artists, Olivia Cornelius and Ethan Maszer (2019 graduates and currently both with Saint Louis Ballet), Christiana Cecere (2022 graduate and currently with Florida Ballet), Elly O’Connell (2023 graduate and currently at Jacobs School of Music at IU), Mauricio Mejia (Artist with Florida Ballet), and Bryan Gregory (Artist at Jacobs School of Music at IU). It has been a thrill to have our graduates and guest artists back in the studios to dance with us again.

All That Is, a ballet by Joseph Jefferies, is set to the beautiful music of Tomaso Albinoni. NYB
premiered All That Is in Raray France in 2015 to rave reviews. The contemporary ballet deals
with themes of gaining empathy and learning how to forgive. The movement phrases contain
references to some intensely personal episodes in the choreographer’s life, but the journey taken
by the dancers in the piece is universal to humanity.

Second on the Program is Ebb and Flow, created by NSB’s resident contemporary choregrapher, Jeremy Ruth Howes. The ballet brings together the entire pre-professional student body. It is always a treat to see all our artists on stage together debuting a new work by Howes.

Molly Tomeny’s Celestial (2017) explores the realm of space through a neoclassical ballet
movement vocabulary. We are excited to welcome this piece by Tomeny back to the stage.
The Spring Series will conclude with the beloved Swan Lake (Act II), choreography by Marius
Petipa and coached by director Denise Cecere. It has been more than 100 years since the
premiere of Swan Lake, and yet it remains arguably the most popular classical ballet of all time.

Act II highlights the demanding precision of the corps de ballet and showcases the delicate
beauty of their Queen, Odette. The haunting score by Tchaikovsky provides a dramatic backdrop to the unfolding story of love, betrayal, and loss. Don’t miss the opportunity to see why this timeless ballet has captivated its audiences worldwide for over a century!
