Somerville/Medford Remembering Nancy L. Fennelly

ancy L. Fennelly of Malden, died on November 7, 2022, at Winchester Hospital, less than five months from the death of her beloved wife Donna Gildersleeve.

Nancy and Donna were together for over 40 years and married in 2004 when their marriage could be legally performed. Nancy was born on June 19, 1947 in Boston MA to Margot Cartier Fennelly and Daniel J. Fennelly, Jr. She was the middle of three children and is survived by her sister Leslie F. Hergert of Somerville and brother Daniel J. Fennelly of Scituate. She is also mourned by her nieces Arie Sowers (and her family) of Acton MA; Meghan Altidor (and her family) of New York NY; Jesse F. Hergert of Somerville MA; her nephew Sam Fennelly of Boston MA; the Gildersleeve family; and many friends.

After graduating from Ithaca College, Nancy became a physical education teacher first in Long Island NY and then in Everett MA. Early in her career, she was injured and disabled, suffering pain in her leg for over thirty years. Nevertheless, she became an active volunteer as a medical hospital escort, a volunteer money manager for the blind, and a school volunteer in a Winchester elementary school. She adored her nieces and nephews, and her cats almost as much. She was a lifelong sports fan and generous donor to many animal-focused organizations. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her name to the Broken Tail Rescue Cat Adoption Center where her cats have been taken.

Calling Hours will be held in the George L. Doherty Funeral Home 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) on January 7, 2022 from 10 am-12 noon.
