As a proud supporter of Alderman Matthew McLaughlin of Ward 1
It’s really hard to explain what Matt’s friendship has meant to me — just knowing that Matt is a member of our political network in our city, gives me great comfort, because I know he is doing so much for his constituency. It shows in the smiling faces of the crowds who attend his meetings – there is a cohesive bond like no other ward I have visited.I say without reservation that everyone who is proud to know Matt McLaughlin, and there are many, are also fortunate to know Matt McLaughlin.
Matt is a true humanitarian, a caring young man who has dedicated countless hours and tremendous effort to ensure that the residents of the ward he represents are met with compassion, understanding and a genuine willingness to assist them with their concerns.
It’s so important that Matt continue to serve Ward 1 – in his commitment to affordable housing, issues that affect our working class families, our elderly, immigrants and other vulnerable groups in our community who need his voice of representation. Matt has a proven record of combating the rodent population caused by the upheaval of 50 years of undisturbed, dormant land at Assembly Row undergoing redevelopment over the last 5-7 years. Mainly, this is the result of negligence by developers who had earlier promised, as it was their duty, to keep rodents under control and out of Ward 1.
I imagine it’s got to be hard work to be there for so many constituents every day, but Matt makes it look so easy. In all the times I have seen him, he’s always wearing a smile and so proud to be serving the residents of Ward 1.
Read testimonials from those who continue to enjoy having Alderman McLaughlin represent them in Ward 1:
“I support Matt McLaughlin for his tireless efforts for affordable housing. As a resident of Assembly Row, paying market-rate rent, I would like to see more affordable units, as these are the people who will create stability and neighborhood in this newest residential area of Somerville. Also, as a parent involved with youth sports, I can attest to Matt’s dedication to ensuring access to safe play space for Somerville’s youth sports teams.” Bev Schwartz, Assembly Row
“Matt helped me with flooding issues and gets back to me quickly. He has welcomed me in his home and I have welcomed him in mine.” Yasmin Sheikh, Melvin Street
“I’ve been friends with Matt’s opponent for many years. I didn’t vote for Matt four years ago, but he’s proven to be an effective, compassionate leader. He cares about all people regardless of their background. He always returns my calls. He will have my vote November 7.” Marty Polignone, Cobble Hill
“Matt is visible and accessible in the neighborhood at all times, not just during campaign season. Adding traffic signals so that I can safely walk to assembly square, posting street lights so that I can walk safely at night and addressing rodent issues in ward 1 are high on my priority list and it’s issues such as these that Matt has addressed.” Tracy Pratt, Bonair Street
“Matt is a champion of people’s rights. He fights to ensure all voices are heard and his work with the immigrant community is a model that other politicians should follow.” Ben Echevarria, Gilman Street
“It’s wonderful to have an alderman who cares about seniors living on fixed incomes. Matt passed a resolution on the board that supported the idea of MA adopting legislation to make it easier for seniors to afford and access health care.” John Robertson, 240 Pearl Street
“Every community meeting, every development review, every snowstorm – Matt is always there advocating for our community. His hands-on approach and accessibility has made him one of our City’s most effective leaders.” Andrew Arbaugh, Minnesota Avenue
“I’m conservative and Matt is liberal. I’m still voting for Matt because he is the one who cares about people. We both served in the military and I know Matt puts service to his country and community above all else.” Tom O’Connor, Minnesota Avenue
“I call, he answers.” Tina Buonaugurio, Kensington Avenue
“Matt pushed developers near I93 to include air filtration systems and contribute to pollution mitigating sound barriers. He is looking out for the health of East Somerville residents.” Ellen Reisner, Mt Vernon Street
“I’ve known Matt since high school. We both served in Iraq. Matt pushed for affordable housing on Washington Street years before he became an Alderman. Years later my family won a lottery and now live there. Matt never expected a friend to benefit from his work, he just knew it would help families.” Jamie Vargas, Washington Street
“Matt is a veteran and us vets stick together! In 2014 seniors at Cobble Hill were all ticketed during the blizzards. Matt made sure all our tickets were forgiven.” Al & Joan Snow, Cobble Hill
“Matt was working on opiate addiction before it was politically popular. We’ve both lost so many friends and I know his efforts come from the heart. People’s children are alive today because Matt spoke up.” Erica Cassesso, Wisconsin Avenue
“I am proud to live in Ward 1 because it is the most diverse ward in Somerville. Matt listens to the voices of all residents, that’s why I support him.“ Alex Galimberti, Gilman Street
