Real Life Somerville Police Stories:Adrian BROOKS (Package Theft, Cambridge Warrants)

On August 7th, 2017, I, Officer Sousa, was on duty and assigned to uniform patrol in East-3. At approximately 4:01pm, I responded along with East-4 Ofc. Khoury to XX Calvin Street for a package theft. Dispatch stated over the air while en route that the male was described as white or Hispanic between 25-40 years old wearing a bright blue shirt and on a bicycle.

Upon arrival, I saw the man who matched that description sitting on a bicycle talking to another male outside of XX Calvin Street. The other male was identified as XXXXX who was the witness. The man on the bicycle later identified as Mr. Adrian Brooks stated that it was a misunderstanding and it was his package. I asked Mr. Brooks if he lived at XX Calvin Street and he said that he didn’t. At this time, I asked Mr. Brooks for some identification which he said that he did not have. I asked for his social security number so that I would be able to identify him. Mr. Brooks took off on his bicycle in an attempt to get away and I was able to catch up and stop the bicycle with my leg. Mr. Brooks got off the bike and began to run down the street and took a left onto Dimick Street and into a backyard. I was able to catch him in the backyard and grab him by his left arm. I was able to get him into handcuffs after he complied. Mr. Brooks apologized for running and said that he had a drug problem and was addicted to crack cocaine. A search of his shopping bag that he had with him, showed numerous contents from packages that he said he had taken off porches in the west end of Somerville around the Powderhouse area.

Ofc. Khoury was able to talk with the victim, YYYYY and the witness XXXXX. XXXXX stated that he came out into the common area in his apartment building when he noticed an empty package on the ground and a pair of sneakers hanging out of Mr. Brooks’ shopping bag. XXXXX confronted Mr. Brooks stating that was his neighbor’s package and Mr. Brooks said that it was actually his friend’s package. Mr. Brooks went outside with XXXXX when the police arrived on scene. YYYYY confirmed that package and its contents a pair of red Nike Luna Glide sneakers valued at approximately $50 was her property. The rest of the packages were confiscated from Mr. Brooks and will be held for safe keeping at the Somerville Police Department.

Mr. Brooks was placed under arrest and charged with MGL C.266/S.20 Larceny by Stealing in a Building and for several outstanding warrants. He was transported by unit 200 back to the Somerville Police Station and booked in the usual manner by Lt. Rymill.

Respectfully submitted,

Ofc. Sousa
