UPCOMING EVENTS

Working with Mosaics – Tuesdays, March 3rd & Tuesday, March 10th – 10:00 A.M. at our Cross Street Center located at 165 Broadway. Hands-on workshop with Artist Emily Bhargava of Connectionlab. The award winning Fit-4-Life Program is coming to our Cross Street Center – 165 Broadway – Starting in March – A unique combination of exercise and nutritional support opportunity under the direct supervision of a certified exercise trainer and participate in individual and group counseling with a nutritionist. The cost to you is $10.- a month that gives you access to fitness & nutritional Fit-4-Life classes each week. Limited scholarships are available – Need more information? Stepping Stones – To Guide Your Way – Monday, March 9th – 10:30 A.M. to Noon – Nancy Duffy, from Beacon Hospice will guide you through the discovery process about end of life planning. Important discussion covering various considerations as we grow older, important documents, end of life care, how to spark conversation with a loved one and how to obtain & complete the document “Five Wishes.” Please RSVP by calling 617-625-6600, Ext. 2300.

Just Make Something – Tuesday, March 24th – 6:00 P.M. at our Cross Street Center located at 165 Broadway. This is a hands-on art workshop with Artist Miranda Aisling Hynes. Turning basic art & recycled materials into non-traditional art. There is a $4.00 fee for materials. Somerville’s All City Band – Tuesday, March 31st – 3:00 P.M. at our Cross Street Center located at 165 Broadway. Please join Rosemary Sears and Richard Romanoff and talented musicians representing all of Somerville’s elementary schools as they present a wide variety of selections you are sure to enjoy. Twin Rivers Casino, Lincoln, RI – Monday, April 27th – Check in time: 9:30 A.M. at Holland Street and 9:45 A.M. at the Ralph & Jenny Center with an approximate return time of 7:00 P.M. – A $25.- fee includes motorcoach transportation & a yet to be determined package. Songbirds of the Northeast – Wednesday, April 29th – 10:30 A.M. at our Holland Street Center – 167 Holland Street – Learn how to recognize our songbirds by their songs and calls and create landscapes that attract these birds to our neighborhoods with a 90 minute power point presentation featuring both images and recordings. This event is free and is offered by naturalist and landscaper John Root. This program is supported in part by the Somerville Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Washington, D.C. Patriotic / Americana Tour – Thursday, April 30th to Sunday, May 3rd – Visit Historic Washington, D.C., WWII Memorial, Arlington Cemetary, Vietnam, Korea, Iwo Jima, FDR, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. Illuminated night tour of the monuments and many many more stops. Trip includes: professional tour director, hotel accommodations, transportation, 3 breakfasts, 1 luncheon, 2 dinners, including dinner theatre, admission to Washington touring, including tour mobile transportation, tax & gratuity. $589.- double or triple occupancy, $749.- single occupancy, deposit of $150.- per person with the final payment due on April 1st. Check in time will be 6:00 A.M. at the Ralph & Jenny Center on Thursday, April 30th with an approximate return time between 10:00 – 10:30 P.M. on Sunday, May 3rd. Painting to Music – Monday, April 13th – 10:00 A.M. at our Holland Street Center located at 167 Holland Street. Connect with your creative side. Learn more about the benefits of mindfulness. Music will assist in creating a focus and a way to express connection to pleasant memories and thoughts. This is a free workshop. LGBT EVENTS

LGBT Monthly Lunch – Monday, March 9th – 11:30 A.M. at our Holland Street Center. LGBT Advisory Group –Monday, March 9th at 4:30 P.M. at our Holland Street Center. We are looking for new members and would love to have you as part of our group. This group meets the 2nd Monday of every month excluding City Holidays and snow emergencies.

LGBT Pizza & Movie Night – Monday, March 16th – 5:30 P.M. at our Holland Street Center. At approximately 5:30 we will be having a pizza & salad dinner with a little time to socialize followed by a showing of a yet to be determined movie. Move details to follow. This event happens the 3rd Monday of every month excluding City Holidays and snow emergencies.

LBT Women Fit-4-Life – Fitness and Nutrition Classes. Classes are Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 6:00 P.M. $10 a month fee – scholarships available & it just might be covered under your insurance. We have available slots and would love to have you. It is the hope of both the Somerville Fire Department and the Somerville Council on Aging that we will receive the grant again in the future. Men’s Group – Meets the first Tuesday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30 A.M. This group is facilitated by our volunteer, Norbert DeAmato. Are you recently retired? Looking to connect with other men in the community? Join our men’s group where you can connect with old friends and make new ones. All men 55 and over are welcome. Caregiver Support Group – Meets the third Tuesday of each month from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Our Social Worker, Natasha Naim, facilitates this group. Are you caring for a parent, relative, spouse or close friend? Feeling isolated or overwhelmed? You are not alone! Come share your experience and practical support. Veterans Group – Meets the third Monday of each month from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. Our Social Worker, Suzanne Norton, facilitates this group. Are you a veteran? The Veterans Group is the perfect opportunity to socialize, have solidarity, to reminisce and to meet other veterans. Low Vision Support Group – Meets the second (2nd) Tuesday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30 A.M. Our Social Worker, Suzanne Norton, facilitates this group. Do you know someone who has trouble seeing? Do you have low vision? Join our Low Vision Support Group for educational and informative information and peer support in a confidential environment. Book Club – Meets the first Friday of each month from 10:00 to 11:30 A.M. Senior Project Manager, Janine Lotti, facilitates this group. Join this group to read and discuss a different book each month. In most cases, copies of the book are available in the COA office. Gardening Club – Meets the second Monday of each month starting at 9:00 A.M. and running for an hour most times. Our volunteer, Vilma Sullivan, facilitates this group. The Moonlighters – Meets every Monday at 10:30 A.M. and runs September through June. Led by Somerville Youth Arts Coordinator, Jimmy DelPonte, the Moonlighters are an older version of the SunSetters. If you like to sing then this group is for you. Sometimes taking their skills on the road and this year The Moonlighters will be performing with the Powers School of Music for a Holiday Concert in December. Brain Games – Meets the first Tuesday of each month starting at 10:00 A.M. This group is facilitated by our volunteers Eileen Jones & Jan Ciganelli. Engaging as a group in brain healthy activities. Sandy Francis, our Cross Street Center Volunteer, facilitates this group. No books, no tests, no stress – just a great group of older adults from all over the world who help each other to listen, speak and learn English.
