VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF CAMBRIDGE AND SOMERVILLE NURSING HOME RESIDENTS

Volunteers are needed to support the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, which helps to protect the rights and dignity of nursing home residents. This state-sponsored program sends certified, trained volunteers to visit residents living in the nursing and rest homes located in Cambridge and Somerville. Volunteers speak with residents about their care, make sure their rights are being respected, and work to resolve problems. The program is managed by Greater Lynn Senior Services (GLSS) through a contract with Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services.

“We are committed to ensuring that the state and federally mandated rights of every nursing home resident are protected,” says Program Manager Jillian O’Brien, who oversees GLSS’ program. “We are looking for people who are good listeners, advocates, and problem-solvers.” Volunteers receive training and certification through the state; GLSS provides ongoing support.
