I, Officer Michael McCarey, report the following summary of events based on direct and indirect interview with the persons named.

 

          On Saturday, October 15, 2016, I, Officer McCarey, was in full-uniform and assigned to marked cruiser 662, patrolling area E3, for the Somerville Police Department. At approximately 11:26 pm, I was dispatched to The P.A Lounge, 345 Somerville Ave. for a reported assault with injury.

          Upon arrival I met with the victim XXXXX and his girlfriend YYYYY outside the P.A Lounge. XXXXX explained that a few minutes earlier he was on the dance floor inside the lounge listening to a live band and slam dancing in a mosh pit (jumping around and throwing his body around) when he felt a hard object hit his head from behind, felt intense pain and what felt like sand pouring down from atop his head. When he checked his head it was gushing blood from where he felt the impact. YYYYY did not see who had perpetrated the act but did see broken glass on the floor and assisted XXXXX off the dance floor.

          As I was speaking with XXXXX, a male who identified himself as ZZZZZ approached me and said that he saw what happened. He explained that as XXXXX danced in the “mosh pit” he bumped into several patrons around the dance floor including ZZZZZ. At some point he bumped into a male later identified as Eric Courtemanche. After the bump, ZZZZZ observed Courtemanche raise an object and slam it against XXXXX’s head. ZZZZZ states that he believes the object was a glass. I asked ZZZZZ if he would point out Courtemanche to me. Officer Moreira and I escorted ZZZZZ back inside where he pointed out Courtemanche standing behind a speaker. Courtemanche was removed from the dance floor where he was frisked for weapons and handcuffed for safety. I asked Courtemanche what happened on the dance floor and he stated that; the other guy bumped into me and I cut my hand. Courtemanche had a small cut on his right hand. It is this officers experience that when a glass object is smashed, the person holding the object usually receives some laceration and it is probable that Courtemanche received the lacerations when he smashed the glass against XXXXX’s head. An inspection of the dance floor resulted in the recovery of several shards of glass and the base to a heavy drinking goblet. These items will be logged into evidence and available for court.

          XXXXX had a laceration to the top of his head approximately 3/4″ in length. Glass shards could still be seen around the wound. He was transported to Somerville Hospital via Cataldo ambulance for stitches to his head. Courtemanche was placed under arrest for Assault and battery with a dangerous weapon to wit glass. He was transported to the Somerville police headquarters where he was booked in the usual manner by Lt. Lavey.
