5TH ANNUAL MAYOR’S FITNESS CHALLENGE KICKS OFF WEEK OF MARCH 29

Four kickoff events planned to engage residents in getting healthy just in time for summer!


SOMERVILLE – Looking for a way to jump-start your spring and summer training? We’ve got the perfect opportunity! The 5th annual Somerville Mayor’s Fitness Challenge kicks off on Saturday, March 29, and for the first time will include an entire week of kickoff events citywide. From March 29 through Thursday, April 3, events will include distribution of Fitness Bags, a free day pass to try the amenities at Brooklyn Boulders Somerville (athletic shoes must be worn), massages by Lincoln Technical Institute, Reiki demonstrations, health and wellness information and displays, arts and crafts and other recreation programming for children and adults of all ages.

The Fitness Challenge is a ten-week event that offers both a Team Fitness Challenge as well as a non-competitive “Lifestyle Pledge” in cooperation with Wellcoin Positive Health Currency. Both offer rewards for participants ranging from better health to discounts at local businesses.

Individuals who join the team challenge, will earn points for weight loss and changes in Body Mass Index (BMI), while those who take the Lifestyle Pledge will earn Wellcoin points by participating in events and programs and logging healthy eating choices throughout the challenge. Wellcoin is free and offers incentives through local businesses and restaurants in its Reward Center (for more information and to sign up, visit http://www.wellcoin.com).

Throughout the program, teams and individuals will earn discounts to local restaurants and businesses. All participants will receive extra points for attending validated events and programs, including fitness activities, healthy cooking workshops, nutrition seminar and City-sponsored events, and much more!

Kickoff events will be held as follows:

· Saturday, March 31, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. SHS Field House, 81 Highland Ave.
· Tuesday, April 1, 6 – 9 p.m. Brooklyn Boulders Somerville, 12A Tyler Street
· Thursday, April 3, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Main Branch Library, 79 Highland Ave.
· Thursday, April 3, 3 – 5 p.m. City Hall, Aldermanic Chambers, 93 Highland Ave.

Kickoff events include: free fitness bags, arts & crafts, story time, and recreation activities for children; health and wellness information; drop-in meditation and Reiki demonstrations; a free day pass to Brooklyn Boulders (athletic shoes must be worn) and more.
