Somerville/Medford Remembering Jeremiah Christian

Obituary

Jeremiah Christian of Medford, Massachusetts passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family by his side on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at the age of 96 years. Born and raised in Dominica, West Indies, Jeremiah was the son of the late William Christian and Sylvie Boufonge. His roots, his culture, and his upbringing shaped the man he became – steadfast, joyful and devoted to the people he loved.

Jeremiah was passionately committed to his family. He was known to his family as a devoted husband, loving father, and wise grandfather. His character was evident in the sacrifices he made for them day after day. Watching his children and grandchildren succeed, brought him immeasurable pride. Whether gathered around the table for a simple meal or celebrating together at a lively party, being surrounded by family was his greatest happiness. Their laughter, their stories, their presence: these were the moments that made him smile the most.

Music was woven in Jeremiah’s spirit. A talented banjo and harmonica player, his younger years were immersed in melodies of past times and his later years with soul stirring gospel songs. His many talents also included gardening and carpentry. He once headed the local farmers cooperative and was appointed chief of the village council in Delices, his home village. He loved fishing, playing dominoes, and enjoying a good game of cards (especially 500; giving loves to anyone who dared to play him, especially his beloved wife and sons). These were the simple pleasures that brought him joy and connection. He loved to cook, creating his signature dish of mouthwatering stewed fowl (hen), which was a guarantee to draw the children and grandchildren to visit him on any given Tuesday. He also enjoyed travel and visited over 20 countries in his lifetime.

Jeremiah lived a long, full life marked by love, resilience and generosity. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the traditions he passed down and the countless memories he created.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Beloved husband of 68 years to Philomen (Thomas) Christian. Devoted father of Juliana Doyle (Steven), Leo Christian (Virginia), Neville Christian (Judith), Kenneth Christian (Sharon), Avonelle Christian, Matthew Christian (Allina), Lyndon Christian (Debra), Eunice Allsopp (Stephen), James Christian and Josiah Christian (Kay), cherished grandfather of 22, and great grandfather of 8.

Also lovingly survived by his brother Benitte Christian and sisters Ruth Charles, Rebecca Didier, Alexandrina René, Tama Francis, Johanna Balthazar, Ezra Maria Christian, Bertillia Christian, and Megan Roberts along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

He leaves behind a legacy that will echo for generations to come. Though our hearts are heavy, we rejoice in knowing that he is absent from the body, but present with the Lord. We will cherish his memory forever.
