Dear Billy T and Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line,
I have five minor children in the Somerville School system. Now that the schools are going with remote learning, I only have one computer never mind now needing five of them.
To top that off I do not have and Internet service to begin with other than my husband’s smartphone that we all share for an internet connection.
My husband works two jobs and I work two jobs as well and when we had to decide between having to install and pay for Internet service or put food on our table to feed our children the children won of course.
It’s hard enough as it is living in Somerville with higher rents and my husband’s car getting ticketed every other week.
The guidance counselors and principles have been very cooperative with us, but now their hands are tied with the mayor’s decision not to reopen the schools and go remotely.
Either my husband or I must now give up one of our jobs to stay home with the children and still with that said we still have no computers nor Internet, so how do we do anything at all?
It seems like the city is working against us raising our children in the city of Somerville where it is almost impossible to survive here. Many months we go without so the children can go with. We don’t have much, but we have each other. What should we do?
