Clarification from Local 76 Union President Tom Ross:
In a recent WBUR interview with Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, regarding safe injection sites for I.V drug users, The Mayor was quoted that Somerville Police, Firefighters and EMT’s are all on board. This could not be further than the truth. The Somerville Firefighters Union was never made aware of or asked their opinion of this proposal. We all agree that actions need to be taken to mitigate the ongoing problems with opioid overdoses but have concerns that Safe injection sites will increase the problems, create additional safety risks and cost the Somerville taxpayers dearly. Not only the cost of running these sites but legal cost the City will encounter defending their rights to run a program that is currently illegal by Federal standards.
