Somerville’s Former Transfer Station/Eyesore Soon To Be A Forgotten Memory

20131028-161629.jpg

By William Tauro

The City of Somerville held it’s wall breaking ceremony on this past Monday at the old incinerator and former transfer station on Linwood Street.
“We may be gathering to mark the tearing down of the transfer station, but we are celebrating the building of a new future for Brickbottom and InnerBelt,” said Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone. “In creating SomerVision, the city’s 20-Year Comprehensive Plan, community members designated Brickbottom/InnerBelt as a transformative area targeted for mixed-use, transit-oriented redevelopment that will provide an economic engine for our city. And with the transfer station coming down, the Green Line Extensioncoming in, and the grounding of McGrath under review, we are well on our way. Reclaiming this once and future thriving neighborhood will help us reach our shared SomerVision goals of creating 30,000 new jobs, new and affordable housing, and new commercial tax revenues to fund our services and schools.”

Anchormen Decimate Mustangs 41-6, Ascend to Central Catholic Small League Champions

This Saturday October 26, the Saint Clement Anchormen faced their final step in their journey to the playoffs by defeating the Marian Mustangs 41-6, capturing the Catholic Central League Small League Champions. The first quarter started with Saint Clement gaining the first lead off a touchdown by RB Deron Hines (Chelsea). Although this would be Hines’ only TD for the game, he would continue being the glue guy by gaining enormous running yards and playing stellar defense for the squad. With about 4 minutes remaining in the quarter, LB Marcus Carvalho (Chelsea) would get an interception. This led to another touchdown for the Anchormen, this time scored by RB Branden Williams. The quarter would end with SC leading 14-0.

The second quarter started with another interception for the Anchormen, this time by CB Macallen Marcelin (Medford), showing off their much improved defense compared to the beginning of the season. This led to another touchdown by WR Junior Oyaronbi (Malden)from a long pass from QB Mike Sullivan (Everett). Although he is rarely mentioned here, Sullivan has done the team extremely well by setting up a lot of the touchdowns that the various Anchormen receivers score. Although the Mustangs would get an interception of their own halfway through the quarter, they were unable to make anything out of it, leaving the score at the half with the Anchormen leading 21-0.

Saint Clement could not rest for long as the 3rd quarter kicked into gear. Williams would get yet another touchdown this quarter, extending the Anchormen lead to 28. Not long after, a fumble recovery would lead SC to yet another touchdown, this one being Oyaronbi’s second of the night as well. There was another fumble recovery on SC’s part later in the game. This was shortly followed by yet another touchdown, this time by RB Casey Baptiste (Medford). The quarter ended 41-0 Anchormen, with the Mustangs looking all but beaten.

The fourth quarter is where the Anchormen decided to put in their Junior Varsity squad. This would eventually lead to a single touchdown for Marian, but this would be mostly inconsequential to the game overall.

The message ringing through the entire team after the game was echoed by Coach Walsh; “It’s been a long time coming.” Saint Clement was not only in the playoffs for the first time after a long drought, but they were the champions of their league. The playoffs won’t be easy, but the Anchormen looked focused and hardened through the regular season. Their first playoff game will be this Saturday November 2nd vs Chelsea High School at 7 pm at Dilboy Stadium. Please come out and show your anchors some support.

A Commentary on Development in Somerville

20131027-220155.jpg

By Matthew McLaughlin

I remember the day the roof collapsed at Russ’ Donuts. As a child my brothers and I would go there from Lexington Park and get fresh donuts that would put Krispy Kreme to shame. When the roof collapsed, the business was forced to close. Soon after, condos appeared.
The trend in my neighborhood at the time was that any vacant space was gobbled up and used for new apartments.

With this development, the identity of the neighborhood changed. Many people I grew up with moved away, either by choice or because they could no longer afford to stay. Those who remain can only remember the neighborhood that once existed. The most frustrating aspect of this transformation was that the community had no say in how it was being shaped.
Today, East Somerville is experiencing a similar wave of development. Unlike when I was younger, I am now in a position to influence the future of my community. The most important thing I will do as Ward 1 alderman is to listen to my constituents and represent their hopes and aspirations for the community. When Was The Last Time That You Used A Phone Booth?

20131025-100919.jpg

When’s the last time you used a phone booth? As pay phones become less and less common the booths the housed them have been left behind in many cities. Not wanting to waste an opportunity to display art, the Somerville Arts Council and the Nave Gallery teamed up to recruit artists who transformed abandoned phone booths into public art. This Sunday, we’re celebrating the opening The Phone Art Box Project, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a tour of the first five completed phone art boxes. Follow Mayor Curtatone from box to box for mini-openings with refreshments at each box, or visit any box during the two-hour event at your leisure.

Senator Jehlen Announces Passage of Parental Leave Legislation

Senator Patricia Jehlen
Second Middlesex District
State House of Massachusetts
Room 513
Boston, MA 02133

BOSTON – Senator Jehlen announced today that the Senate voted to pass S865 An Act relative to parental leave. Senator Jehlen is the lead sponsor of this legislation, which protects employees and modernizes the legal concepts of parental leave.
“I am proud of the hard work of all of those involved in getting this legislation passed, which provides important protections for parents of both genders so that they may focus on establishing a life for their new child,” said Senator Jehlen. “The legislation protects both employees and employers through gender neutrality and transparency in job protection.”
An act relative to parental leave updates Massachusetts’ parental leave laws to reflect the evolution and current needs of modern families. The bill makes the parental leave law gender neutral, allowing for the parental leave statute to be available for both men and women. Employers who do not provide comparable leave to fathers may be violating constitutional rights to equal protection under the law. The legislation not only protects parents, but also protects employers because it remedies the current, unconstitutional nature of the law that risks violating the principle of equal protection.
Additionally, An act relative to parental leave requires employers to inform employees in writing prior to their parental leave, or at the time of making a request, if taking leave beyond 8 weeks would eliminate their right to return to work. Present law provides up to eight weeks of job-protected, unpaid parental leave. However, in some cases, employers verbally grant a worker more than eight weeks, even though the additional weeks are not job-protected. In one prominent case decided by the Supreme Judicial Court, Global NAPs, Inc. v. Awiszus, 457 Mass. 489 (2010), an employer granted a mother ten weeks of maternity leave, only to fire her after she came back to work because she was only legally protected for eight of those weeks. This kind of misleading and unfair treatment would be outlawed by the new legislation.
The legislation was strongly supported by the work of Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS), the AFL-CIO and Associated Industries of Massachusetts (AIM). You can see the full text of this bill by going to: https://malegislature.gov/Bills/188/Senate/S865.

Somerville Fire Fighters “All In” For Emma

20131020-231323.jpg

Somerville Fire Department Lt.Tom Tierney’s young daughter, Emma was just diagnosed with Leukemia. Lt. Steve Belski has put this site together for anyone that might want to help in any way that they can, to try to help ease some of the burden off this family’s shoulder, while they are going through this very difficult time.

The beautiful little 7 year old girl in this picture is Emma. She was diagnosed last Thursday with Leukemia and is currently undergoing treatment for the next 6 weeks at Children’s Hospital. Emma’s parents Tom & Jessica are two of my very good friends. I would like to raise some money to help with their medical costs. No donation amount is too small….every bit helps! Thank you very, very much! Please continue to keep Tom, Jessica, Emma and her little sister Addie in your thoughts and prayers! We are “All In” For Emma!

Somerville Police Warning about Scam Calls Dialing Ville Residents.

We have received several complaints recently from Somerville residents and businesses concerning a specific phone scam. A caller from a ‘617’ area code phone number is randomly calling our residents and stating that a family member was in an accident or being held hostage and demands money. In all cases it was a scam. When the police have called the number back, a recorded message states the voicemail is not set up and then it disconnects the call. If anyone receives a call such as this, please report it to the Somerville Police by calling 617-625-1212.

5th Annual Tina DeLellis Luncheon Honoring Mary Louise Daly

20131019-142703.jpg

You are Invited to the 5th Annual Tina DeLellis Luncheon Honoring Mary Louise Daly Friday, October 25, 2013 from 11:30a.m. to 1:30p.m.

at The Highland Kitchen 150 Highland Ave., Somerville, MA Mary Louise Daly at Clarendon Hill Towers

Honoring the memory of Tina DeLellis, we recognize the continued good work by others in the Somerville community.

Mary Louise Daly is a Somerville treasure and inspiration to all of us who work both professionally and as advocates for the creation and sustainability of affordable housing in Somerville. After raising her family in Cambridge and looking for affordable housing for herself, Mary Louise moved into Clarendon Hill Towers — only to learn that it was an expiring use building and she and 500 other families might lose their apartments. Along with others, Mary Louise helped organize the Clarendon Hill Tenants Association and saved the buildings for the residents. For almost 25 years she has organized and worked for affordable housing in our community; we are all awed by her energy and perseverance and grateful for her example. Tickets are $25 per attendee, available online. Register early as seating is limited!

Two-Day National Parkour Event Comes to Somerville

An annual two-day gathering of parkour practitioners from around the country comes to Somerville the weekend of Oct. 19-20, sponsored by the City of Somerville, the Somerville Recreation Department, and Shape Up Somerville.

American Rendezvous (ARDV) is an opportunity for practitioners to participate in a series of workshops and training sessions led by renowned elite coaches flown in from several different states and from abroad. Parkour was born in the banlieues (suburbs) of Paris in the 1980s and is now one of the world’s fastest-growing sports. While often recognized in the fantastic images seen on YouTube or television, the sport is actually a form of movement that has roots in a wide variety of physical disciplines, including gymnastics, martial arts, climbing, breakdancing, and track and field. For the past three years, ARDV has taken place in Columbus, OH, but this year, due to the rapid growth of our programs in this region, Parkour Generations Americas has decided to bring it to the Somerville area.

ARDV is open to adults and high-school students (ages 14 and up) of all experience levels and athletic backgrounds, designed as a “melting-pot event” for people to meet and train with each other in a safe, fun and hard-working atmosphere, while celebrating a healthy and active lifestyle. More than 60 participants have already pre-registered for the event.

The event begins on Saturday, Oct. 19 in the SomervilleHigh School gym from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with an hour break for lunch in the nearby area. Local eating establishments that are endorsed by Shape Up Somerville are offering discounts to participants. On Sunday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., the event will spread to a number of outdoor “parkour hotspots” throughout downtown Boston. The coaches and some attendees will return to Somerville for a dinner gathering generously hosted by Johnny D’s Restaurant and Music Club in Davis Square. Other key local sponsors for the weekend event are Cantina La Mexicana, Gentle Giant, New England College of Business and Finance, Rockland Trust, and Triumvirate.

The registration fee for the two-day event is $75 per person. We are also working closely with City of Somerville staff to make sure that local high school students interested in participating in both days of the weekend workshop are able to do so, regardless of ability to pay the registration fee.  A number of full and partial scholarships will be offered to these students.  One day rates for Saturday only are also available for $45.

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone Will Not Run for Governor

20131017-074831.jpg

By William Tauro

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone announced on Wednesday that he will not run for governor of Massachusetts.

In a recent statement the mayor wrote:

“As everyone knows, I’ve been considering a potential run for Governor. Well, I’ve come to a decision and I will not be seeking the Governor’s office in 2014. As much as I feel I have the experience and vision to lead our state forward, this simply is not the right time for my family and me to be involved in an all-consuming statewide political campaign. During this process there were times when I was 95% certain I was getting into the Governor’s race, but once school started up it became clear to me that I am currently in the right place on a personal and family level. Oliveira arrest

On Monday, October 14, 2013, I, Detective-Sergeant Lavey, was working a paid detail assignment at Samba Bar and Grille located at 608 Somerville Ave. At approximately 12:50 AM, I observed two men and two women exiting the night club in a hurried manner. One male was attempting to push the other male away from one of the two females later identified as the victim, I followed the four outside where I observed one male (never identified) trying to prevent the defendant from getting at v. The defendant was very angry and being very aggressive. Finally, the defendant pushed the unidentified male out of the way, approached v, grabbed her arm and they began to argue while she cried. The defendant then slapped v on the left side of her face with his right hand and she pulled away holding her face. The slap was violent and loud and v head spun to her right.

I stepped in and placed the defendant in an arm-bar hold and placed him against a parked car where I was able to handcuff him. v requested I not arrest the defendant so she could just take him home v said the entire incident was her fault because she observed the defendant kissing another woman and she became jealous which caused an argument.

v said the defendant and she have been boyfriend/girlfriend for seven years. When the defendant was taken away in the mobile prisoner transport vehicle, I advised v of her 209a rights. v declined an abuse prevention order and medical attention even though she complained of pain on the left side of her face. I examined her face and observed some swelling under her left eye and the side of her cheek.

The defendant was identified as Arildo Oliveira of Revere during the booking process. v appeared at the SPD to bail out Oliveira

St.Clement Anchors Football Sports Update

By Colin Walsh
The St. Clement Anchors matched up against the Defending Super Bowl Champion Cathedral Panthers this past Saturday and both teams put on a great defensive clinic.
Cathedral had lost only one game since 2010, which was a controversial loss in the 2011 Super Bowl. St. Clement relished the roll of underdog and used it as motivation. “We knew we had the horses to be in the race with Cathedral we just had to execute the game plan” said Assistant Head Coach George Murray. Supporting Food Day in Massachusetts October 24th

What does a local food system look like?

abe

Somerville is the densest city in New England, topping the population scale at 77,104 in 4.2 sq. miles of space. Somerville’s lack of open space and its rich industrial history (contaminated soil is a challenge that residents face when attempting to garden) allows for an endless amount of creativity that people are using to participate in the ‘grow your own’ movement. From porches to rooftops, raised beds to reclaimed lots, businesses, individuals, and youth are building crop knowledge and farming experience as a community. Although Somerville has a long way to go to create the kind of autonomy from the global food system that many cities around the world are striving for, there are features that should be celebrated for its innovation and forward thinking for a healthier, collaborative, and resilient community.
