Dear Billy T and Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line,
If you notice in these photos of West Somerville they are out dumping salt everywhere. When we approached a driver we asked why are you putting this excessive amount of salt out there and it’s not even snowing nor is it freezing and the temperatures are way above freezing all week.
The driver‘s response was “The city over bought the salt and our boss told us to get rid of it all and come back empty!”
Now the streets look like Bolivian Desert with all this salt everywhere blowing up salt dust everywhere.
Salt is not good for in a large dry quantities. According to Google: “Excessive road salt accelerates the deterioration of infrastructure, corroding steel reinforcements in bridges and crumbling concrete surfaces. It causes pitting in pavement, allowing water to seep in and create potholes. Beyond roads, it pollutes drinking water, kills roadside vegetation, and damages vehicle bodies.”
