Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line: Unpopular Opinion: The Somerville Homeless Coalition is ineffective. We are spending millions to watch the crisis get worse.

Dear Billy T and Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line,

I know this sub loves to defend the SHC, but can we look at the actual results for a second?

I checked their nonprofit filings on ProPublica and they’re pulling in over $8.4 million in revenue now. That is a massive jump from a few years ago. But if you walk through Davis Square today versus 2020, does it look like we’re getting an $8 million return on investment?

The actual data is bad. Boston Indicators showed homelessness in the area is up like 67% year over year. Meanwhile, the SHC has been running things for 40 years and their own impact reports just brag about “bags of groceries distributed” or “engagement visits.” Those are maintenance stats, not solutions.

We’re basically funding a containment strategy that keeps people on the street comfortably enough to stay there.

If a company burned this much cash with these results, they’d be dissolved. We need to stop blindly donating and ask where the money is actually going, because it’s clearly not fixing the problem.
