Route 28 (McGrath Highway) Sidewalk Closure and Detours

Starting Monday morning, April 8, sidewalk detours between Third Street and Rufo Road

CAMBRIDGE/SOMERVILLE – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing daytime construction operations for concrete sidewalk repairs on Route 28 (McGrath Highway) southbound in Cambridge and Somerville between Third Street and Rufo Road. Detours will start Monday, April 8 at 6:30 a.m. and
remain in place for approximately one month.

Inbound pedestrian detour:
Pedestrians from Rufo Road will be redirected to the Route 28 northbound sidewalk, turn right onto the northbound sidewalk, continue south, turn right at Third Street, cross Route 28, and back onto the southbound sidewalk.

Outbound pedestrian detour:
Pedestrians from the southbound sidewalk will turn right at Third Street, cross Route 28, turn left onto the northbound sidewalk, continue north, turn left at Rufo Road, cross Route 28, and back onto the southbound sidewalk.

The work is being conducted as part of a $15.6 million project to perform bridge repairs, paving and other related work on 1.5 miles of Monsignor O’Brien/McGrath
Highway, Route 28, between Cambridge and Somerville.

All work is weather permitting and may change without notice. 

Signs and traffic control devices will be used to guide pedestrians around the work zone.  

Those traveling through the area should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution.
