A bill that’s before the Joint Committee on Financial Services on Beacon Hill would require the state to conduct fingerprint checks of the state and national criminal history databases for applicants looking to drive for Uber and Lyft.
Sponsor Rep. Danielle Gregoire (D-Marlborough) said while there are current laws that go a long way toward fairly regulating these services, there is more the state can do to protect the public safety.
“Massachusetts residents should be able to utilize these services with the knowledge that lawmakers have done everything possible to ensure their safety,” said Gregoire. “It is our job to ensure that the playing field is level for all ride for hire services and this bill is an attempt to further that goal.”

What really needs to be done here is to have the same regulations for these companies that cabs do as they provide the same service. Which is why I would never use these services or allow my loved ones to use them. We have a local taxi business that pays taxes and fees here and have the higher costs to run the business and have more laws making sure they have a safe driver. It’s a no brainer..
First of all, some cab companies do not even bother to do a background check or check for an active license and there driving record. And uber & left driver pay taxes just like local cab companies, every driver is an independent contractor,
And uber & left up there background Checks & driving history that’s why between them both 1,000 drivers had been let go do what ever!!!!! Pls ppl get your fact straight before jumping to conculsion. Thank you…..
