A Message from Somerville Animal Control

PSA Please share!

Due to the many downed trees in Somerville and surrounding areas, I’m getting calls/messages about nests with baby birds that have been displaced.

If anyone finds a nest, please put the babies back in the nest (if possible, if not, any nest-sized container will do) and put the nest up in another nearby tree or somewhere at least 10 feet off the ground. THE MOTHER BIRD WILL COME BACK & take care of her babies. IT IS A MYTH that once a baby wild animal is touched by human hands the mother will reject them.

Unfortunately there is NO SUBSTITUTE for a mother bird and orphaned or kidnapped baby birds have a very high mortality rate.

Thank you to all who care enough to help any animal in peril.
