Ward 4 Alderman Tony Lafuente:Update on Water Charges

I wanted to update you on the increased water charges that property owners saw on their most recent water and sewer bills. I received a lot of calls and emails about this and I know that the $240 annual increase is affecting people’s bottom lines – especially those on fixed incomes.
The Board of Alderman were not notified in advance about this increase and, unfortunately, the Board has no power to offer remedies on this issue – the city ordinance that controls this states that the Administration has total discretion over this.
Under the leadership of Board President Bill White, we have changed that ordinance, and before any future increases, the Board will be notified. I will also continue to impress on the Administration the need to keep water charges as low as possible.

  1. So what is the update? The administration ( you guys) slipped in an increase then say you knew nothing about it and now can’t do anything about it.what a great country that city government can get away with this sort of thing.

  2. Water charges in Somerville, when combined with sewer charges are horrendous. Where has all the money we already have been paying for sewer gone? Should it not have been, at least part of it, to keep the sewer system updated?
