Rebekah Gewirtz:”Pat’s under attack, we need to help”

My daughter Nina, me, and Pat Jehlen together in Davis Square this summer

September 1, 2016
Dear Friends,
I’m writing today because my friend, mentor, and our fearless progressive champion, Pat Jehlen, is running for re-election to the state senate. It’s been awhile since I’ve reached out through my newsletter and I felt if ever there was a time, it’s now.
Just this week, ten days out from the primary election, I learned that a hedge fund out of New York fronted by a group called “Democrats for Education Reform” (DFER) plans to spend $200,000 to defeat Pat Jehlen within the week. They will pour tens of thousands of dollars a day into Pat’s opponents efforts to oust her. And why? Because Pat stands strong and fights the privatizing of our schools and our government. She has said no to big moneyed interests and yes to fighting for our interests, even at great political risk. This group knows that if they can install one of their own in the state senate they will come closer to privatizing and coopting the state services and supports we rely on to remain PUBLIC. Read this blog by Kevin Franck for more on the unprecedented nature of this sort of infusion of outside money into a state legislative race.
I’m asking you today to join me in standing up and standing with Pat Jehlen on Thursday, September 8th. There are several ways you can get involved in the next few days. Here is a link to sign up to help Pat by door knocking, phone banking, poll watching on election day, hanging door hangers in advance of Election Day, and other activities. Here is a link to Pat’s website for more information about her campaign.
Please join me over the next week to spread the word about this important race. Use the hashtag #ImwithPat on social media and get your friends out on the doors. I just got one of DFER’s misleading mailers tonight. And so did our neighbors. There’s no time to waste.

In solidarity,
Rebekah Gewirtz

Former Ward 6 Alderman

  1. In 2008 Pat Jehlen voted against mandatory lifetime sex offender registry for child rapists. She voted against 10-year mandatory sentences for rape of a child with force. She voted against banning sex offenders from driving ice cream trucks and school buses. I will keep voting against her every chance I get. I’m sick of her career politician treatment of the citizens of Somerville! Frankly, anyone will do a better job than her.
