There were plenty of free open street events that featured live music, family-friendly activities, food, and more as residents celebrated the season at “Seize the Summer,” the August installment of the City’s SomerStreets festival this past Sunday.
The event took place from 2 to 6 p.m. between Davis Square and Teele Square on Holland Street.
SomerStreets is the City of Somerville’s take on the internationally renowned Open Streets concept, closing busy city streets to vehicles, and opening them up for cycling, walking, dancing, running, and other modes of activity. Through SomerStreets, the City and its community partners aimed to promote and encourage easy access to physical activity, fresh foods, and reconnecting with neighborhoods and businesses and their unique cultural elements in a thriving urban environment.
Activities along Holland St. will included:
Live music on two stages including School of HONK, Pat & the Hats, and Big Big Buildings
Flea market with over 50 vendors
A 90 ft obstacle course water slide – open to people of all ages! Bring your bathing suit!
Trapeze performance by Esh Circus Arts
Large-format chalk drawing with Somerville Open Studios
Hockey, football, and other active kids’ games with Somerville Recreation;
Skateboarding performance and free skate – bring your skateboards!;
Craft vendors, and community vendors;
Facepainting and henna painting;
And more!
