The Massachusetts DOT has a long term plan to turn the hulking McGrath O’Brien overpass into a pedestrian, bicycle and auto friendly boulevard. The first traffic pattern changes associated with that long term plan begin on Monday, April 11.
The southbound, that’s heading toward Lechmere, Somerville Ave. off ramp will be closed. Traffic will exit the McGrath at the Washington St. exit.
And vehicles entering the McGrath northbound, towards Assembly Square, will find new traffic signals leading them around the dark tunnel to the on ramp further up.
Pack some extra patience when heading through this interchange in the next few weeks as drivers get used to the new traffic patterns.
