Real Life Somerville Police Stories:Kathleen Piracini (Larceny/Shoplifting, Receiving Stolen)

On January 30, 2016 at approximately 18:00 hours, while working as marked unit Alpha-1, I observed a female known to me as Kathleen Piracini exiting TJ Maxx. I am familiar with Piracini as I placed her under arrest approximately 3 weeks ago for shoplifting from Sports Authority, located 2 store fronts from TJ Maxx. It was my understanding that Piracini had been trespassed from the property by Assembly Square Security and was no longer allowed in the area of the Assembly Row stores. I called out to Piracini to discuss the details of her being trespassed from the area and she looked at me and then began to walk in a very hurried manner into the parking lot. I began to walk towards her when she began moving in between cars in an apparent attempt to allude me.

After I called to her again Piracini stopped. I immediately observed her carrying two opaque plastic bags containing numerous items of clothing with the tags on them. Through my training and experience, I know that individuals intending to steal from retail establishments often bring with them such plastic bags to assist in concealing merchandise. At this point marked unit East-1 operated by Officer Van Nostrand arrived to assist. I asked Piracini what she was doing in the store and she stated that she had just returned something and was leaving. I contacted TJ Maxx Loss Prevention, who are familiar with Piracini, and asked them to review surveillance tape and tell me if Piracini returned anything, to which I was quickly informed that she had not. At this point Officer Van Nostrand entered the store, reviewed surveillance tape, and was able to see Piracini clearly conceal a pair of shoes in her bag, and exit the store without paying.

Piracini was placed under arrest based on the review of the surveillance tape. A search of her bags yielded three items from TJ Max totaling $179.97. For these items, Piracini is being charged with violation of M.G.L. 266 §30 Larceny under $250. Six items from JCrew, also located inside of Assembly Row, were also recovered totaling $292.67. Piracini did not have a receipt for these items and would not provide a plausible explanation for where they came from. For these items Piracini is being charged with violation of M.G.L. ch. 266 §60 Receiving Stolen Property over $250. Inside of Piracini’s purse I found a small pair of pliers which I believe was used to facilitate her thefts. For this item Piracini is charged with violation of M.G.L. ch. 266 §30B Unlawful Possession of Theft Detection Device Remover.

Respectfully submitted,

Officer Anderson #315
